Description
One of the best-loved and most enduring members of New Zealand’s acting community, Davina Whitehouse has enjoyed two dramatic careers. As a young RADA graduate she entered Britain’s thriving pre-war stage and screen industry, working alongside such theatrical legends as Noel Coward, Ivor Novello, Margaret Rutherford and John Geilgud. Then, as an emigrant to post-war New Zealand, she became a leading light in this country’s budding professional theatre, acting and producing for the stage, radio, TV and film.
Davina is a self-told story of this remarkable woman. From infant memories of the 1918 Armistice to her movie heyday in ‘comic maid roles’ in the 1930s, from her work in Radio New Zealand’s Drama Department to her chat-show career with Beauty and the Beast, Davina spins a warm and engaging narrative of an acting life. Alongside her theatrical memories she shares the joys and sorrows of her family life, including a gripping series of letters to her sister recounting the terrors of the Blitz. Illustrated with photos from all stages of Davina’s life, this gracious autobiography is a gift to be shared.
