Foreword Dear Friends, Welcome to the world of Weight Watchers! For more than two decades, our Organization has been dedicated to listening as you share your successes, your difficulties, and your feelings. Through this sharing process, you have helped Weight Watchers Research and Development staff continue to bring you one of the best and most effective weight-control programs in the world. We have always considered your wants and needs and, because of our desire to offer you the best possible help available, we have kept abreast of the latest findings in all weight-related fields in order to keep our Food Plan current. We have kept pace with an ever-changing world, listening and learning as science teaches us more about obesity and how to help the overweight. We have used this knowledge, along with recommended dietary guidelines, to periodically update the Food Plan. Some time ago, we discovered that people need guidance to help them maintain their desired weight while still enjoying the foods they love, which is why we added a Maintenance Plan to the Program. We also discovered that food guidelines alone were not sufficient to help people lose weight or maintain their ideal weight, so we added a Self-Management Plan. We offer our members this Plan to help them acquire the invaluable skills needed to control the urge to overeat. In 1979, we added a moderate exercise plan to the Weight Watchers program to help members experience the sense of well-being, zest, and vitality that exercise can bring to their lives. Recently, we heard you ask for a plan that was simple to understand and follow, a more flexible plan that could fit easily into any life-style, and, most important of all, a plan that would give you a faster start. After many months of research and development, we were able to combine everything you asked for with the most up-to-date scientific knowledge. Now we offer you QUICK START, our new plan – one that is easier and more enjoyable to follow. As our Program was changed, the Weight Watchers staff combined their culinary abilities and nutritional knowledge to incorporate these changes into our newest cookbook.
