This book is not a family history nor is it in the definitive sense an autobiography.
In 1862 a venturesome young man from Ireland settled in New Zealand with his wife and infant son and for over a century the name of Hanan has been closely associated with the city of Invercargill. The city was represented in parliament for nearly sixty years by two descendents of that family.
The last member of his generation has now written “A Dentist at Large” which briefly depicts parts of the family life and relates a wide range of interesting incidents and experiences, at times amusing, at others tragic.
Gordon Royland Hanan, B.D.S., was born in Invercargill in. 1906, was educated at Otago and Southland Boys’ High Schools and qualified in dentistry at the University of Otago. He served in the Dental corps in the Middle East and Italy, is a Past President of the N.Z. Dental Association and on retiring from dental practice worked on the Manapouri Power Project.
An observant interest in his profession and in community affairs, active participation in sport and a ready sense of humour well qualify the author to present a book that will have a wide appeal.
