Description
English Country Gardens is an excursion through the English countryside in summer, from small cottage plots where old-fashioned flowers live in clever harmony with vegetables and fruit, to the more spacious gardens of manor house and rectory, where collections of choice plants are carefully sited to create a personal vision of Eden.
The book is arranged in three chapters, dividing the weeks of summer into a gardener’s chronicle and following the flowering season through English gardens from Cornwall to Kent. The introductory text of each section serves as a diary, recording the author’s observations on a variety of topics, from seasonal events in the garden to the writings of the earliest gardening authors on plants and plantings, garden ornament and design, festivals and bees – all inspired by the gardeners she met and the wonderful diversity of gardens they have created.
