Description
This book starts where first primers leave
off, and it offers a thorough grounding in
dinghy racing.
Yves-Louis Pinaud takes the keen beginner
in racing from the first principles right
through boat handling, sail setting and
rigging, racing rules, tactics and strategy
and even includes very worthwhile chapters
on physical fitness and diet.
You can find everything here explained
clearly and in great detai I.
A vast number of specially taken
photographs and clear drawings illustrate
the book and leave no doubt as to the
author’s meaning when explaining different
points.
A particularly valuable feature of the book
is the series of panoramic fold-out
photographs which describe, far better than
any words, how to perform certain
manoeuvres correctly such as tacking,
setting the spinnaker, trapezingand
starting a race.
This is a book which is authoritative and
right up-to-date and is being adopted as a
standard work by sailing schools.

A highly successful helmsman in many
classes, Yves-Louis Pinaud gained
selection to the French Olympic team in
1960 as the-Firm class helmsman.
After 1960, Pinaud became more
interested in teaching others to sail and,
encouraged by the tremendous expansion
in small boat sai ling in France and the
interest of the government, he took the post
of National Technical Director of Sailing in
the French Yachting Federation. In
particular, he had sole responsibi lity for
training the French Olympic team and
introduced many new methods.
The author spends h is whole I ife teach i ng
sailing and yacht racing and writing about
the sport for many famous magazines. His
experience ranges from Moth dinghies to
12-Metres and can be rivalled by few other
men anywhere.
I would strongly recommend any
helmsman with aspirations above the
weekend club race to read this book
