THE EAGLE FLYS FREE
has been described as a unique book and this is perhaps because its origin stems from a unique organisation, the Confederate Air Force, described in detail in one chapter of the book. Inspiration for the publication was a journey to New Zealand in May 1982 by a party of United States Confederate Air Force members to join in the 40th commemoration of the Battle of the Coral Sea. Developments in aviation which led up to this historic naval encounter involving principally aircraft of opposing fleets are recorded; they outline the evolution of the aircraft carrier and pay tribute to several pioneer aviators. A tribute is also accorded the United States of America for its part in the defense of New Zealand and the Pacific during World War II.
Many interesting events and episodes prior to, and after Captain Musick’s 1937 Pan Am clipper flight to New Zealand, are interspersed with various personal experiences. These factors, together with a survey of the United States links with the South Pacific from the time of the 19th century whalers to the Starlifter aircraft of today, make interesting reading.
