Description
A prominent feature on New Zealand’s townscapes is the restored house. Many New Zealanders buy old houses, alter them, paint them, live in them, and enjoy them. But many people, knowing nothing about New Zealand house styles, how they evolved, and what design elements are important, restore unwisely and with disastrous results.
Restoring with Style is a style book for home owners and restorers. The author has made detailed studies of more than forty typical New Zealand houses built between 1840 and 1935. Each one has been photographed extensively, plans have been drawn to scale, and decorative elements have been recorded. The book gives practical advice for practical problems, explaining the design concept behind the various house styles, and describing the elements that make them unique. Martin Hill is a practising architect with a special interest in house styles. He makes no apology for concentrating on smaller, more humble New Zealand houses. His personal interest is in the houses people live in, rather than the mansions and public buildings that are far removed from everyday life.
