Description
The Pride and Drama
of New Zealand at
Olympic & Commonwealth Games
This is in a sense a travel book. It
seeks to take the reader on a
journey through New Zealand’s
sporting past, present and future,
indicating milestones along the way
as New Zealand’s versions of the
Olympian gods travelled their long
and weary miles in pursuit of their
goals. Some of the destinations
were reached and the goals
achieved, some were not. But we
see along the way that the effort
was made. We see the victors and
the vanquished, the triers and the
champions, flicking through
moments in history like the
signboards of passing railway
stations.
There are those whose names
stand in New Zealand history on
the highest pedestals – Jack
Lovelock, Yvette Williams, Peter
Snell and John Walker.
We see Norman Read in Melbourne
wearing down Russians and also in
Melbourne the agony of yachtsmen
sitting out a protest before the
unspeakable relief of success. We .
see the collective delight and pride
of the rowing eight in Munich, the
hockey team in Montreal.
The Olympics are the summit of
summer sporting endeavour. The
Commonwealth Games are of
lesser international standing – the
atmosphere is more friendly, the
competition less demanding. But all
find their own levels.
In THE GAMES, the authors relive
the moments of drama, the
moments of triumph, the moments
of sadness, the moments with
which every New Zealander lives
every two years.
