A CHOICE OF
WILLIAM MORRIS’S
VERSE
selected with an Introduction by
GEOFFREY GRIGSON
Many people today will know William Morris’s designs
for fabrics or wallpaper even if his name means nothing
to them; he is still remembered for his own brand of
socialism. As a poet, however, his work has tended to be
slighted where it has not been ignored. There has never
been an adequate or considerable selection of his verse,
and there has been no selection at all in print for years.
Nevertheless there is at the centre of his substantial
auvre, as Mr. Grigson points out in: his persuasive and
illuminating Introduction, ‘a body of poems now under-
valued which would still be this man’s title to a just
remembrance, even if nothing else of him were known’.
This timely selection justifies that claim.
