Description
Hawke’s Bay Writers 1996 is a random collection of work by a group of women who have met over recent years to hone their writing skills and to seek constructive comment from co-members.
Hawke’s Bay is a fertile area known for its rich farm and horticultural land and pedigree stock. Fruit and vegetables are grown in abundance, many vineyards and wineries produce international award winning wines, its sea and river fishing grounds encourage both commercial and hobby fishermen and the clear waters provide all kinds of leisure activities. Hawke’s Bay also claims two unique features., the Cape Kidnappers Gannet Colony., the only on-shore nesting area in the world., and its Art Deco architecture.
The disastrous 1931 Hawke’s Bay Earthquake destroyed Napier and much of Hastings, but when the burned-out Napier was cleared of debris and rebuilt in the current Spanish Mission style of architecture, it was to become the Art Deco Capital of the world and in recent years a great tourist attraction.
Even more important, to many, is Hawke’s Bay’s remarkable art scene. Potters, artists, sculptors and a vast number of crafts people and those in the performing arts flourish in lively productive groups. So it is no wonder the creative Hawke’s Bay writers find endless inspiration and stimulation in this charmed bay.
