Cover and Inside Title Page: Often in Korean temples one can
see large murals depicting life’s pleasures and sorrows within a
society known for its art, culture and ancient tradition. This is
what KOREA GUIDE attempts to portray to its readers. In the
two photos over 85 persons are illustrated (only 1/25 of the
entire painting). The one scene depicts a Buddhist ceremony
with dance, music and recitation of the sutra while the other
illustrates a tightrope walker with shaman dancers and musical
instruments of another type. Buddhist deities hover above while
in the lower portion of the mural the tribulations of hell are
portrayed. In closely studying these “murals of society” one can
~ almost feel the vibration of laughter and song, the rhythm of
the dance and the portrayal of humor, joy and sorrow in life
on the Korean peninsula.
