Description
The whole point of this book is to make the choosing, buying,
serving and enjoying of New Zealand wines more simple and
straightforward. It aims to be a strictly practical guide to New
Zealand wine for the average wine drinker.
Too many wine books are deadly serious. Wine is
wonderful, but let’s not get too intense about it. Wine is to be
enjoyed. It is a tragedy that so many people think wine is
hedged about with strict rules, do’s and don’ts. The way to
drink wine is the way you enjoy it. You need never, but never,
get uptight about wine.
Some guidelines can be given to short-circuit trial and error.
In doing so, many wine books get bogged down in
technicalities and jargon, so that the ordinary wine drinker
gets bewildered and thinks wine must be a very abstruse and
complicated business.
This book aims to avoid jargon and technicalities interesting
only to the expert. It is mainly about New Zealand wine
because some ninety-five per cent of wine drunk in New
Zealand today is local wine – and the proportion is
increasing. But much of the guidance given on New Zealand
wine applies generally.
Nowadays the serving of premium New Zealand wines, or
matured New Zealand wines, is every bit as much a status
symbol as offering impressive imported wines – often more
so among the knowledgable. This book seeks to give guidance
on the wines to look for according to varying needs and the
ones to put away for future use.
But there is really only one basic wine rule: drink the wine
you enjoy.
